Annual Events

The school has a number of special events that occur each year which provide a focus for student learning and create opportunities for the school community to become involved in the school.

Book Fair

Each year Poseidon Primary School hosts a Book Fair to coincide with Book Week. It is a great way to encourage reading and provide books for the library. The children and the wider school community are involved with the preparation, setting up and daily running of the Fair. To conclude Book Week our students participate in a dress-up Book Character Parade. Parents and friends are then invited into the classroom for shared reading with their children. Money raised from the Fair goes towards more books for the school library.

International Food Day, Lapathon & Art Show

International Food Day has become a Poseidon Primary tradition. Students learn about a country and its food. Parents and extended family members are welcomed to the school to enjoy an afternoon tasting the delicious food that each class had prepared. Our school community, together with the staff and students make this a very successful day. There is always a real buzz of excitement and we are all looking forward to this year’s experience.

ANZAC Ceremony

Every year invited guests and the wider school community attend our ANZAC service. A very moving, fitting and respectful ceremony, the assembly carries on the ANZAC tradition and enables our students, parents and wider community to understand the significance and importance of the occasion.

Speak Out Competition

Poseidon Primary conducts an annual Speak Out competition to provide students with the opportunity to participate in oral presentation. Each child in Years PP to 6 prepare a speech to present to their class. Two class finalists from each year level then present to the school community in a Speak Out Final, with year level winners receiving an award.

Spelling Competition

This very successful competition continues to generate greater student interest in spelling. Students from PP to Year 6 are given a year level list of words to learn before competing an in-class test to determine the four finalists for each year. These finalists then competed on stage in the undercover area in front of the school and parents to determine the Champion and Runner Up for each year level. The Champion and Runner Up for Years 3 to 6 then go on to represent the school in an interschool competition.

Year Six Activity Week

Each year the Year Six graduating students participate in a Graduation Dinner and four days out of school activities. All children are presented with Graduation Certificates, a yearbook and a memento from the school. This annual event is a wonderful farewell to our Year Six’s as they graduate to high school.

Book Award Assembly

This is held towards the end of Term Four each year and it provides the opportunity for each class teacher to present a number of awards to recognise the achievements of selected students.
