Numeracy & Mathematics

Mathematics is composed of multiple but interrelated and interdependent concepts and systems which students apply beyond the mathematics classroom.  At Poseidon Primary our students learn to apply their mathematical understanding creatively and efficiently, with carefully paced, in-depth study of critical skills and concepts.  Students develop an increasingly sophisticated understanding of mathematical concepts and fluency with processes, and are able to pose and solve problems and reason in Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability.

Poseidon Primary teaches mathematics with a focus on the number and algebra strand of the Australian Curriculum. This focus area was identified as an area for whole school improvement, based on the analysis of NAPLAN data, individual testing and teacher judgements.

Stepping Stones

Poseidon Primary has introduced the Stepping Stones program as a school wide approach to the teaching of Mathematics that is aligned to the Australian curriculum. An award winning, core mathematics program developed by specialists for Australian primary schools, Stepping Stones make maths more focused and coherent through sequential, targeted teaching. A range of online and print resources engage our students and foster their thinking and reasoning skills. Teachers can access to all online content from all year levels, equipping them with everything they need to accommodate mixed abilities in the classroom

Mathletics

At Poseidon Primary, all students and staff have access to Mathletics, an online mathematical learning resource.  Mathletics allows students to log on and complete set tasks designed by their teachers both at school and at home.  Students are also able to compete online with students around the world to consolidate their skills.  Mathletics plays an important role across the school in computer assisted learning, supporting students in developing their understanding of new concepts, as well as providing remediation, extension and homework activities.
