BYOD

All classes from PP to Year 4 participate in the BYOD (bring your own device) 1:1 iPad.  Staff are trained to assist with day to day running of the iPads. This will enable greater access to educational apps and websites for students.

Rationale

In the West Australian Curriculum, students develop ICT capability as they learn to use ICT effectively and appropriately to access, create and communicate information and ideas, solve problems and work collaboratively in all learning areas at school, and in their lives beyond school. The capability involves students in learning to make the most of the digital technologies available to them, adapting to new ways of doing things as technologies evolve and limiting the risks to themselves and other in a digital environment.

Aims

The Poseidon Primary BYOD program aims to:

  • Provide a student centred engaging learning program for our students;
  • Develop responsible digital citizens who are able to use technology in the most effective ways;
  • Facilitate the development of knowledge and skills necessary for the 21st century workforce, including digital-age literacy, innovative and creative thinking, problem solving, effective communication and collaboration;
  • Allow continuous access to educational materials allowing learning efficiency to happen anywhere, anytime,
  • Strengthen links between home and school, giving parents the opportunity to see, everyday what their child is learning at school

What is the BYOD program?

The BYOD program is Poseidon Primary School’s 1:1 iPad program. The program is based on the idea that every students has access to an iPad on a daily basis to engage students and enable them to develop skills and habit to become successful 21st century learners. Teachers continue to teach lessons using established teaching and learning practices and use technology to enhance and personalise learning and curriculum for students.

Why have a BYOD

As part of implementing the Western Australian Curriculum, ICT General Capabilities, schools are expected to:

  • Teach social and ethical protocols and practices, including online etiquette and cyber safety
  • Ensure students conduct investigations, using research and critical thinking skills
  • Provide opportunities to create
  • Communicate ideas and information
  • Manage and operate ICT.

The BYOD program effectively allows teachers to integrate the teaching of these capabilities into their lessons on a daily basis. Additionally, from 2018, the Digital Technologies curriculum, a new subject area with new skills and unique concepts have been reported to parents. Implementing a 1:1 BYOD program allows our teachers to address the needs of the new curriculum in the most effective and engaging ways.

If you are considering investing in an iPAD for your child:

As we do not have the required assistance for troubleshooting we request that only iPAD’s are sent to school. iPAD devices are standard for our school bank.

If you are not able to provide device for your child to bring to school:

The school has a small bank of iPads available for use. These iPads are shared between all the classrooms.

The devices will only be used at school for purposeful educational experiences. As teachers, we are aware that many children of this age already spend a great deal of time in front of screens. As such, we will only use technology if we believe it will truly enhance a child’s learning experience.

Thank you again for your support with this exciting program. We understand that it is a little nerve-wracking to send a valuable device to school with your child. However, by ensuring greater access to technology, we are helping our children to become productive and positive digital citizens.
